Checklist for Your Pet Sitter

If you are going on vacation, but can't take your pets with you, there are three options: board them, leave them with a relative, or hire a pet sitter. Here is a checklist to leave with your sitter:

1

KEYS

Make sure your sitter has the keys to your home and all the security codes if you have a security system. You can change the codes when you return home.

2

CIRCUIT BREAKERS, GAS & WATER

Show your sitter where the circut breakers are and how to reset them in case of a power outage. Show your sitter how to turn off gas and water in case of an emergency.

3

ITINERARY

Type out your itinerary, flight and hotel information. Include your cell phone number.

4

VETERINARIAN

Leave your pet's veterinarian's phone number and address as well as an emergency "after hours" number.

5

MEDICATIONS

Show your sitter how to administer medications and write down the names of the meds, dosage and times to give – for example, with food. Leave all meds in clear view and be sure all is clearly labeled.

6

VISITS

Let your sitter know how many times to visit. Be sure you are both clear about feeding, walking, and playtime.

7

BACK-UP

Make sure your sitter has a back-up partner. Make sure you have a friend or relative available who can watch your pet in case your sitter has an emergency and cannot fulfill his/her duties. Leave all back-up information with sitter. Introduce everyone before you leave!

8

OFF-LIMIT AREAS

Let the sitter know about any areas in your home or yard that are off-limits to your pet. Close off areas of the house where you do not want your pet or sitter to be.

9

ifence SYSTEM

Show your sitter where the transmitter is and what to do in case of a power outage or a break in the wire outside. Demonstrate how to place the collar on your dog so your sitter is familiar with the routine. Emphasize that your dog should not go out in the yard without wearing the collar. Be sure to tell your sitter that your dog should NOT wear the collar if they are going for a walk!

10

PRECAUTIONS

If you hire a professional sitter, make sure the company is bonded, in case there is a problem or loss of personal property. Lock up your valuables. Buy beverages and snacks for your sitter to enjoy while she/he is playing with your pets. It's a great incentive to stay a bit longer with your pets, and you'll be a favorite client!
